Looking Back 回顾

Well, the pain has continued to diminish. Still could not walk fast though. Everything has to go slow motion in order not to induce pain. However, thankfully, my strength is returning more and more.

At this point, I did some looking back.................. From the beginning, we are quite at a lost on what  to expect and how to respond. We are very grateful to many people who helped us one way or another. There was one lady we went to for some counseling at NCC. Her advice was very practical. "Pull all your resources together," she said. "Make a list of what you have." We took it from there. Of course, financial impact was something we have to consider foremost. All the insurance agents have been were very helpful, so were the colleagues we consulted with.  I am so blessed that the bulk of the medical expense has been covered by the medical insurance which I purchased a few years back. Medical care is costly. Nonetheless, we are very thankful for the good medical expertise and facilities available here. So it is best to purchase sufficient medical coverage. I pray that there is no need to use this, just to be safe though.

We are very grateful to have a support network. We received much help and blessing from family, friends, colleagues, Church and support groups. Their care and concerns have spurred me to stay positive and motivated. Their encouragement and prayers are vital during the road of recovery. As a family, we prayed together every night. There are also many people who pray incessantly for us, and some friends, colleagues, relatives and support group give very practical help and advice. Without anyone of them, it would be difficult to walk through those dark moments.

Then there are another resource we draw upon heavily. That is FAITH. I was quite calm the first couple of months.  Taking thing one step at a time, fully trusting God for His plan. As stated in Jeremiah29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a futureHowever, there were times I struggled. As the days extended to weeks and month, sometimes I grew frustrated. Some simple tasks at times seemed unbelievingly difficult to do. During the hospital stay, once I looked out of the window. I saw some workers cleaning the hall way in the next building. I thought then, "how good it is just to be normal, able to work without any physical problem!"

Time and again, I have to come before the Lord to seek His strength, and to wait upon Him, and to exercise patience and perseverance. As what He promises, and evident from my earlier accounts, He is always faithful and shows His mercy. His grace is sufficient for me. There are things which are so unpredictable in life. But God is never changing, the Creator of the universe, and full of loving-kindness. . Do you not want to anchor your life in an unfailing God?  Would you want to let Him guide the path of your life?

Isaiah 58:11

11 The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry

and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden,

      like an ever-flowing spring.

Progress 进展

It has been more than 2 weeks after the op. The pain has 80-90% subsided.  Actually felt quite good despite some discomfort. Resumed strolling in the park yesterday. Met a neighbor during the walk, he offered his kind moral support.

Reviewed with the surgeon today. He explained about the op and the histology again.  All is progressing well. Due to the fact that it was a major operation, the "residual" pain would last for quite a while, especially when engaged in physical activities such as walking. He explained that in other countries this op would require a hospital stay of up to 2 weeks. Otherwise, he said, I could assume myself as NORMAL now. Thank God!!

I was admitted to hospital on Dec 15 after lunch. The doctor collected some blood sample, and left the needle for subsequent injection.

When I was wheeled to the Op theater the 2nd day morning, the GA-in-charge looked at the needle and said, "That was not done correctly, the hand has swollen." Then a young doctor came over and tried re-doing it at the guidance of his senior, another relatively young doctor. Failed. The latter took over. Failed. Finally the GA-in-charge took over. He did it at ease. My poor hand was bruised for the next few days. Anyway, I did made my minor contribution to the medical training at the hospital!

Fortunately the surgeon in charge of the operation was superb. The doctors I talked to pre- and post op were all speaking very highly of him. The operation went well, just as we and many have prayed. Praise God! I was sleeping and waking, much in a blurred stage the first day. I did remember some doctors, family members came to visit. It was supposedly good for my recovery. Pastor and my cell leader came to pray the 2nd day. I felt much better then. When I was asked by the physiotherapist to move to the chair from the bed, I felt so giddy. They explained to me that was the side-effect of morphine, which was used as the pain-killer. I tried to limit the use after that.

The next few days, most of the tubings attached to me were gradually removed. The surgeon and his team of doctors came by to check everyday. Of course, the nurses were wonderful in caring for me too. The surgeon was really nice guy, he was friendly, kind and humble, trying to answer every questions we had. On the 3rd day, he told me the lab report was out. The disease cells were confirmed to originate from the colon, 80% of which were effectively killed by the chemotherapy. The rest were removed during the surgery. Another great news was that earlier during the original assessment, the surgeon was intending to remove the whole right portion of the liver, and part of left liver. He told us that the scan did not show an blood vein on the lower half of the liver, otherwise it could be preserved. He mentioned only 10% of population would have that. I prayed over this. During the op, he actually found an blood vein! So not too much of the liver had to be removed. Amazing thing is that the liver would grow back after the surgery. Indeed our Creator has made us wonderfully.

On the 4th day, the surgeon discharged me. It was nice to be home. Not so much travelling especially for the family members and my dear wife, who had accompanied me through. The first few days at home was mostly spent on sleeping to counter the pain.

Today being the Christmas Eve(Silent Night), the pain has eased significantly, so I am able to blog again. Thanks God for the hope He placed in each and everyone of us. In Him we are short of nothing. Wishing everyone a very special Christmas. That you may receive the love that God has intended for each one. As written thousand of years ago:

Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
   Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
   Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Nature

During weekends, we went further to get to the nature. These sites were refreshing. So blessed to be able to get there within 20minutes or so. At the reservoir park this morning, a mother told her child, " We can smell the scent of grass here!"

These past week, some colleagues visited. They are all dear sisters-in-Christ. We had a good time sharing, laughing and praying. They brought me much encouragement.

I prayed for my wife recently on 2 occasions. When she had a fishbone stuck to her throat, and having an infection. Miraculously God heard my prayer and healed her. All praise to Him!

Next step 下一步

After 2nd chemo session, some of my hair have no longer pledge allegiance to my scalp. Some would depart without much hesitation. As I comb my hair, it has been thinning a bit. Some days ago, my wife asked me, "Do you want to shaved all your hair so you go bald for a while?" I politely turned down the proposal, that is my crowning glory! Few days later, I received a devotion which I subscribed to.

Matt10:30
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

We both have a good laugh reading through the devotion. God has showed us His humor.

So I have been praying no more chemo session. Today when I met the doctor again, my wife showed me another slip on 3-day chemo session on top of my medical file, supposed to start today. Then the doctor reviewed the PET full body scan. Thank God the 2 tumors in the liver have shrunk. He referred us to another doctor to perform an surgery to remove the tumors. He cancelled the chemo session!

Prof O is the doctor we saw next. He was a kind and gentle guy. He explained to us what he would be doing during the op. He scheduled it to be next Thur Dec 16. Expect to be discharged 2-3 days later. He said I would back home to celebrate Christmas.

Continue praying for God's total healing! Amen.
